Brampton Club History
Brampton Golf Club was established in 1921, when sixty acres of farmland east of Highway 10 and south of Steeles was acquired by the town for $8,000. George Cumming, the Head Golf Professional at Toronto Golf Club, routed the original nine-hole course on the land, winding it’s way through the Etobicoke Creek. At the time, Cumming was a partner at Thompson, Cumming and Thompson, the design firm that included famed Canadian golf architect Stanley Thompson. The course officially opened in 1924 with a membership of 60 men and women.

In 1929, through a donation from T.W. Duggan, a prominent Brampton businessman and former Mayor, Brampton Golf Club purchased additional property with the intent to expand two holes and improve the course. Stanley Thompson was brought on that same year to rebuild the seventh and eighth holes, bringing the total length to 3,060 yards, playing at a par 35.

In the late 1950s, it became clear that the Club, due to the rapidly rising population of Brampton, and in turn demand for membership, was outgrowing the nine-hole layout. 193 additional acres were purchased just south of the course, and in 1961 construction began on a new, 18-hole layout designed by Thompson protégé Clinton “Robbie” Robinson. The routing of this layout still stands today as Brampton Golf Club.

In 2021, Brampton Golf Club celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Course Architecture
One of the deans of Canadian golf, architect Clinton “Robbie” Robinson designed the current Brampton Golf Club in 1963. Robinson was a protégé of Stanley Thompson and is responsible for designing or reworking over 300 golf courses across North America. Known for following many of the key tenets of Thompson’s work—strategic, yet playable—Robinson worked with the
land he was given, including an intriguing piece of property near the Etobicoke Creek that closes the routing.

In more recent years, numerous top Canadian architects, including Doug Carrick and Ian Andrew, have worked on the course.

Brampton Golf Club is a parkland-style course characterized by tree-lined fairways, and ingenious use of the natural landscape. Drama abounds from the first hole, with its tee tucked tightly to the stately clubhouse, and the fairway meandering into a river valley before emerging at a green on a ridgeline.

The course is widely recognized for its tremendous home stretch of holes that encounter the Etobicoke Creek, culminating in the dramatic par-3 16th, which drops into the river valley, and finishing on the incredible 18th, which snakes along a ridge to a green perched in front of the clubhouse.

In 2022, Brampton Golf Club tapped Cam Tyers, whose design work includes Turnberry Golf Club and Eagle’s Nest Golf Club, to execute a major bunker and green surrounds remodelling. The project has reinvigorated the routing and brought out the best in Robinson’s original design. This redesign is the latest step in Brampton’s commitment to pushing its golf course forward,
while remaining true to the club’s history.
